Gecko Tape

Adhesive-free, reusable tape inspired by gecko feet.

This adhesive-free tape has a microstructured surface that mimics the feet of the gecko lizard, famous for its ability to walk on walls and even ceilings.

The surface is a silicone film with close to 30.000 pin-shaped elements per cm². The pin-shaped elements adheres to contacting surfaces by Van der Waals forces that are weak electrostatic forces between molecules. 

The tape adheres best to smooth surfaces and can be reapplied many times.

Applications for gecko tape:

The tape is used to attach dashcams to the inside of car windshields and to attach WiFi routers to windows.

The tape adheres to smooth, clean surfaces and the adhesion is not very strong compared with conventional adhesive tapes. The tape does not stick to textured surfaces, wood without coatings etc.  

One advantage of the tape is that it does not leave any residue on surfaces it is attached to. 

The tape I stock has a soft velour textile middle layer and a strong permanent adhesive on the backside. The tape is only offered in a 10 cm width.

The tape can function in temperatures between -50°C and 80°C / -58°F and 176°F.
