ABS Plastic Sample

Long-lasting, tough thermoplastic with a high-quality look and feel.

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is a widely used inexpensive amorphous thermoplastic known for its excellent balance of toughness, rigidity, and surface finish. It offers high impact resistance, dimensional stability, and good mechanical strength, making it ideal for housings, enclosures, and structural components. ABS processes well through injection molding and thermoforming, with low shrinkage and consistent results. Its glossy surface allows for aesthetic finishes, painting, and plating. ABS also maintains performance across a wide temperature range and resists many chemicals.

Why choose ABS plastic?

  • Easy to process - It has consistent and predictable behavior, enabling the production of molded parts with tight tolerances.
  • Excellent surface appearance - It has an attractive glossy finish
  • Good impact resistance - Makes is suitable for consumer products
  • Relatively inexpensive - ABS is often classified as a commodity plastic

Why not choose ABS plastic?

  • Limited UV resistance - Causing it to degrade and discolor with prolonged sun exposure. In comparison, ASA plastic, which shares many similar characteristics, is better suited for outdoor use.
  • Poor thermal resistance - It softens at temperatures as low as 80°C (176°F).
  • Low chemical resistance - Chemicals such as acetone (nail polish remover) dissolve ABS.
  • Prone to stress-cracking - Snap joints need to be designed to avoid continuous load.

Typical applications for ABS plastic:

  • All kinds of consumer electronics and appliances - For example vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, and computer keyboards
  • Toys - for example LEGO bricks
  • Computer mouse
  • Housing of a toaster
