Wood-Based Fibre (Lyocell)

Sustainable textile fibre with better properties than cotton

Wood from beech or eucalyptus trees is dissolved in a non-toxic solvent to a thick cellulose paste and then extruded through fine openings to produce cellulose fibre. The solvent is continually recycled in a closed-loop process and therefore produces no harmful byproducts.

The processed wood fibre is softer than cotton fibre yet has a higher breaking strength. It can also absorb 50 percent more water than cotton which helps limit bacterial growth and the resulting smell of sweat on clothing.

Used for:
Lyocell is used for shirts, sportswear, home textiles, and linens. The fibre is also used to make nonwoven fabrics used for wet wipes and other hygiene products.

Details:
The fibre is biodegradable and the wood used is a renewable raw material sourced from managed forests where no irrigation or pesticides are used.

The fibres are often mixed with cotton, polyester, acrylic, or wool to enhance the aesthetics and functionality of the fabric. 

The fibre has a higher cost than cotton.

The material is also known under the generic name “lyocell” or “regenerated cellulose fibre”.
