This carbon fibre fabric is woven with flat unidirectional tapes, called Spread Tow tapes, instead of round yarns (tows) used in traditional fabrics. The flat nature of the Spread Tow fabric means it packs more fibre than a traditionally woven fabric at the same thickness and composite parts using the fabric can therefore have an overall higher concentration of carbon fibre compared with matrix material (e.g. epoxy). This improves mechanical performance which allows for a 20-30% weight saving.
It is used in aerospace, sports, automotive, and industrial applications, where low weight and high strength are needed. Current applications include F1 racing cars, super yachts, ice hockey sticks, and ultra-light aircrafts.
The fabric can be customised for individual applications and is available in a wide variety of configurations with regard to tape widths, fibre types, areal weight, and type of impregnation. Fabrics are available with a weight from just 43 grams per square meter.</details>
