Fumed Silica

Lightweight filler with shear thinning properties.

Fumed silica is made from round particles of silica with a diameter of less than 30 nm, which are fused into branched, chain-like, three-dimensional particles measuring ~0.3 µm. Liquids containing fumed silica have thixotropic (aka shear-thinning) properties, which means their viscosity decreases when shaken, agitated, or otherwise stressed.

Applications for fumed silica:

Fumed silica serves as a thickening agent in paints and glues, where the thixotropic properties allow the paint to flow easily when applied with a brush and then thicken and adhere to the surface. It is also used as an anti-caking agent (free-flow agent) in dried food products. It functions as a mild abrasive in toothpaste and is added to lipsticks to improve their temperature stability.

Silica has the chemical name silicone dioxide (SiO2) and is the main content in quartz (aka beach sand). The powder has a surface area of 120 to 380 m²/g and a pour density of 40-60 kg/m³ depending on the variant. It is naturally hydrophilic, but can be treated to become hydrophobic.
